West Virginia and Georgia were states that McCain was expected to carry easily but he is struggling to meet that expectation. And New Mexico, Colorado, and Virginia are states that seem to be turning blue in 2008.

According to the General Election Georgia poll by CNN/TIME:

"It looks like McCain has to play defense in states that Republicans have been able to count on in previous elections," Holland said. "That doesn't mean he will ultimately lose those states, but it does mean he has less time and money to spend in the swing states that are likely to decide this election."

According to the General Election Virginia poll by CNN/TIME:

"Obama is winning men and women in Virginia, and is doing well across the state east of the Blue Ridge Mountains," CNN polling director Keating Holland said.

According to the General Election national poll by Pew Research Center:

With few Americans expressing a positive view of national conditions and President Bush’s approval rating reaching a new low (25%) in a Pew survey, the political environment favors the Democrats. Barack Obama holds a sizable 50% to 40% lead over John McCain, and a greater share of his supporters back him strongly. Moreover, the percentage of voters saying they have definitely decided not to vote for McCain has risen steadily, from 37% in early August to 45% in the current survey.

According to the General Election Washington poll by Survey USA:

Obama Begins to Run Up the Score in Washington State with Women and Voters Older than John McCain: In an election for President of the United States in Washington State today, 10/14/08, three weeks until votes are counted, Democrat Barack Obama defeats Republican John McCain, 56% to 40%, according to this latest SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for KING-TV in Seattle and KATU-TV in Portland Oregon. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released three weeks ago, Obama is up 2 points; McCain is down 3.

According to the General Election Colorado poll by CNN/TIME:

Colorado, a state that hasn't voted for a Democrat in the race for the White House in 16 years. The new poll indicates the Illinois senator holds a four-point edge over McCain, 51 percent to 47 percent.

According to the General Election South Carolina poll by Survey USA:

South Carolina: Some Inroads For Obama, But McCain Maintains Double-Digit Advantage: In an election for President of the United States in South Carolina today, 10/14/08, three weeks till votes are counted, Republican John McCain defeats Republican Barack Obama by 55% to 41%, according to this latest exclusive WCSC-TV poll conducted by SurveyUSA. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released three weeks ago, Obama is up 2 points; McCain is down 3.

According to the General Election New Mexico poll by Survey USA:

Blue Mexico: In an election for President of the United States in New Mexico today, 10/14/08, Democrat Barack Obama defeats Republican John McCain 52% to 45%, according to this latest SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for KOB-TV in Albuquerque. Compared to identical SurveyUSA polls released two and four weeks ago, little has changed; Obama has consistently taken 52% of the vote; McCain has taken 44%, 44%, and now 45%.
