American People Oppose The Iranian Government But Favor The Iranian People12/22/08 Tags: Foreign Relations From Zogby
» Commentary by Kris Lazaro (registered Democrat) In a recent survey, Americans were asked as to how they felt about Iran's government and its people. NOt surprisingly, Americans felt positive towards the Iranian people, but negative towards the Iranian government. What was more surprising, though, is that although about half of those surveyed thought Iran was a national security threat, about 60% oppose military action in dealing with such a threat. So what does this mean? This author believes that Americans are tired of conflict. We have now been involved in war for the better part of this decade and Americans are simply fed up with it. Although Iran may or may not have nuclear weapons, we cannot simply attack their country based on assumptions. Americans also hold favorable opinions regarding the Iranian people, mainly because those surveyed have worked with and had close contact with Iranians. Racism and the hatred for other race stems from not knowing the other culture, so in this case, the author feels that for the Iran situation to become better, we as a nation must learn more about the Iranians and negotiate with their government to come up with a peaceful resolution to this growing threat.
