Drug Use Is A Criminal Justice Issue Not A Public Health Issue5/18/09 Tags: Drugs From Rasmussen (conducted: 5/14-15/09)
» Commentary by Kris Lazaro (registered Democrat) Controlled substances, or illegal drugs, has always been a hot topic. The problem always begs the question: should illegal drugs be considered a criminal justice issue or a public health issue? To this author, illegal drugs should not involve the law. It is the responsibility of the individual to consider taking or not taking these substances, knowing full well the consequences of the drugs. The law shoud not punish those who take illegal drugs, because truly, the only people that illegal drugs hurt are the actually users. The same argument can be used for smoking and alcohol. The only reason why these two are not illegal is because the government can tax these two substances. Our jail systems are overcrowded with illegal drug users, usually non-violent criminals, and it is now time to release these people. We need to go after those criminals who actually commit violent crimes and release those imprisoned for illegal drug use. We need to wake up and realize that the only reason why illegal drugs are illegal is because our government has no way to control its distribution and because of their inability to tax such substances.
