The Gallup poll has been running a series of polls on what issues adults nationwide deem to be morally acceptable or not.

The polls were conducted from May 8 through May 11, 2008.

And here was how the question was conducted.

"Next, I'm going to read you a list of issues. Regardless of whether or not you think it should be legal, for each one, please tell me whether you personally believe that in general it is morally acceptable or morally wrong. How about . . . ?"

Issue Morally Acceptable Morally Wrong
Divorce 70 22
Gambling 63 32
Death Penalty 62 30
Stem Cell Research 62 30
Sex between unmarried man and woman 61 36
Medical testing on animals 56 38
Having a baby outside of marriage 55

41

Buying and wearing clothing made of animal fur 54 39
Doctor-assisted suicide 51 44
Homosexual relations 48 48
Abortion 40 48
Cloning animals 33 61
Suicide 15 78
Cloning humans 11 85
Polygamy 8 90
Married men and women having an affair 7 91

An overwhelming percentage of adults believe that divorce is morally acceptable yet it is almost a consensus (91%) that having an affair is wrong. I guess you could say that one should try to work on their marriage, resolve their issues, before considering being with somebody else.

If we define divisive issues in America to be issues where more than 40% believe it is morally acceptable and morally wrong, then those issues are:

  • homosexuality
  • abortion
  • having a baby out of wedlock
  • doctor assisted suicide

Gambling

casino launch pad

One surprise to the author of this article is that gambling was considered morally acceptable by 63% of individuals. I suppose an individual could join one of the trusted online casinos and gamble responsibly in such a way that it does not affect his/her family financially. It is not the government's responsibility to legislate behavior like that.

As a statistician, I have also worked in the gambling odds industry. There are a lot of parallels between gambling odds and political polls.

CasinoLaunchPad.com has reviews on several of the online casinos and gives ratings on them. They only review sites they know to be trustworthy and reputable. Specifically critical is the fact that they mention which ones are "US Friendly". This is because some online portals do not accept US customers and deposits from US banks. Bonus information and promotions available at online casinos is kept up to date.

Abortion

Despite the fact that the majority of polls show that Americans are pro-choice, more adults think abortion is morally wrong than acceptable. As we stated about the gambling, i guess you could say that government should not be legislating morality.
