US Consumers Slow To Buy Gifts This Year12/17/08 Tags: US Economy From Rasmussen Reports
» Commentary by Kris Lazaro (registered Democrat) Americans are scared to buy Christmas gifts this year. According to a recent survey, Americans have yet to even start buying Christmas gifts for their friends and family. So, what does this all mean? People are hurting. Perhaps, those who have not started shopping will never begin. With this failing US economy, who can really blame them? It's one thing to procrastinate, and another thing to not have any money. A great idea for those who are trying to save money include going to wholesale clubs like Costco or Sam's Club. Often, these wherehouse clubs offer its members great savings on gifts, especially during this time of year. Another great idea is regifting. Although this mode is not readily socially acceptable, regifiting is a viable way to save money--but make sure the person you are giving the gift to does not know the person who you got the gift from (for obvious reasons). In closing, this will ultimately hurt the retail market, but what can the average person do, but not spend. This is the beginning of a new era for Americans: a time where the dollar is weakening and all our spendful excesses are coming back to haunt us.
